Manton - a place for everyone to enjoy.

HIstory

Original home of the Yana and Yahi communities, with Maidu, Astugewi and Wintun relations to the land of what is now called the foothills of Mt. Lassen.

Now

Home to families both young and old, some for generations and others brand new. Lumber, viticulture, recreation, retirement, ranching, fishing, hunting, and farming are a few parts of the community.

Future

A place where clean air, water and land are cared for, so that future generations may thrive.

Manton could be described in many diverse ways and provides meaning to many. Located at 1800-3500ft in elevation, where the northern Sierra Nevadas meet the southern Cascades. Manton is in the western shadow of Lassen Peak and sits in the eastern foothills of the Sacramento River valley. With a landscape evolved by earth, water, air and fire, habitats with volcanic soil bases, clean flowing creeks, native biology and time have formed diverse conditions and communities. It is in the heart of the Battlecreek watershed with major creeks, such as Rock Creek and Digger Creek supporting the community. It supports a diversity of animal and plant communities that the human community have lived among for 4000-12,000+ years. Fire is a part of our community and relationship to it is ever evolving. With the Ponderosa fire of 2012 and the Manton fire of 2005, fire is a living memory for many. The Manton Firesafe Council is a community lead effort to protect the people and property of the Manton community from the catastrophic effects of fire through prevention, education, cooperation and action. Its membership is all people that call Manton home, or have a 96059 zip code. There is a board of directors that consist of a chair, vice-chair, secretary, treasurer, and projects-chair, in the process of acquiring a 501c3 non-profit status through the state of California. The group aims to hold general community meetings at 6P on the second Monday of every month, open to all members to share in the process together.
